href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/10\/sports\/liu-wins-nec-championship-with-return-to-march-madness-for-first-time-since-2018-already-secure\/\">have reeled in huge team spirit <\/a>for the March Madness-bound Sharks of Long Island University with a hot new signature wave \u2014  despite neither having even attended the school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say one of the things about our friendship \u2026 is an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/13\/sports\/vincents-clam-bar-helping-fuel-new-yorks-march-madness-bound-teams\/\">obsession with college basketball<\/a>,\u201d Cameron Koffman told The Post of the unwavering commitment he and longtime pal David Pochapin have for LIU.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter project,\u201d said the Yale University grad, who met Pochapin, a Lehigh University alum, as kids at The Bronx\u2019s Riverdale Country School.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old devoted outsiders recently went viral for creating the overhead \u201cFins up\u201d clap that LIU\u2019s spirit section \u2014 <em>a k a<\/em> \u201cThe Reef\u201d \u2014 now does when the team shoots free throws.<\/p>\n<p>The courtside clap is now the hottest expression of college hoops fandom in the land \u2014 even being <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iKalebHenry\/status\/2030773632733958340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted by some University of Nebraska fans<\/a> and leading Barstool Sports to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/barstoolsports\/status\/2030392857974964248\">crown LIU as \u201cAmerica\u2019s team.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt took a few years, but the entire college basketball world is picking up on it,\u201d Pochapin said.<\/p>\n<p>Pochapin \u2014 who said he learned to read better when his mom gave him The Post sports section as a little boy \u2014 and Koffman and a handful of buddies are accustomed to \u201cbeing the loudest five people at a sporting event.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He said they were previously often among just a handful fans for games in the gym at the Brooklyn campus of LIU, which also has a site in Brookville on Long Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZP8q5QXR5\/\">was really no one in the building<\/a>,\u201d the FinTech worker said, particularly during the team\u2019s low tide in 2023, when they won just three games.<\/p>\n<p>Given that \u201canything you said and did was heard and echoed throughout,\u201d it became the perfect storm to lean into the now-iconic chant they created a year later, he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201c\u2018Fins up\u2019 is going to be a thing for this whole clapping after the free throws,\u201d said Pochapin, who lives in Chelsea in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I guess from there, I just started yelling, \u2018Fins up!\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uncharted waters<\/h2>\n<p>The men\u2019s dedication throughout the team\u2019s ebbs and flows now has tons of fans swimming to the shark tank.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">The section was packed with over-the-top supporters who made<\/span> the floor shake during the team\u2019s Northeast Conference title-winning 79-70 victory over Mercyhurst on Tuesday night, when\u00a0LIU properly punched a ticket to the Big Dance, proudly sporting a 14-1 home record as it headed to the NCAA Division I tournament.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what home-court advantage is about \u2014 that energy,\u201d said LIU head coach and former Knick Rod Strickland after last week\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p>Notable LIU alum and Fox News commentator Brian Kilmeade, who played soccer at the university, is all in on the hype.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to think the whole country will understand LIU can play with the big guns on the national stage,\u201d he said, adding that it \u201csays a lot about Rod Strickland\u2019s coaching ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former LIU basketball player-turned-ESPN and MSG broadcaster Alan Hahn is also diving into the madness head-first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had my kids doing fins up every time there was a free throw,\u201d said the Suffolk County native, who\u2019s been watching the team\u2019s fantastic arc religiously this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, definitely, the players feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure tournament,\u201d said the player, who dropped 24 points in the NEC championship game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI truly believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seas the day<\/h2>\n<p>The fin-atical Koffman and Pochapin \u2014 who previously <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/04\/13\/ross-cellino-on-infamous-cellino-barnes-law-firm-breakup\/\">produced an off-Broadway play called \u201cCelino v. Barnes\u201d<\/a> about the famous upstate lawyers \u2014 adopted LIU as their team after a nomadic stretch of trying to find a local school to root for.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWe always were clapping after the free throws,\u201d said Pochapin. \u201cSo I guess from there, I just started yelling, \u2018Fins up!&#8217;\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Michael Nagle for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe went to Columbia, Iona, Fairfield, Manhattan, Fordham, Wagner,\u201d said Koffman, who works in property management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went everywhere,\u201d the Williamsburg resident said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The players, Pochapin and Koffman celebrate the game. <span class=\"credit\">Michael Nagle for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Strickland\u2019s NBA legacy and sad state of fan affairs at LIU got them hooked three years ago, they said. <\/p>\n<p>Koffman and Pochapin said they made it their side gig to reel in more and more fans, starting with pulling everyone they knew into the craze.<\/p>\n<p>Now the buddies are the Sharks\u2019 de facto boosters.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>They\u2019ve taken freshmen players out to a fancy Italian dinner, and Koffman even made a one-of-a-kind donation to the gym thanks to a fisherman family member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy stepdad had this 14-foot shark replica based on one he caught. \u2026 And my mom basically was like, \u2018If it goes in the house, we\u2019re getting a divorce,\u2019 \u201d Koffman said.<\/p>\n<p>The nautical nonsense is now proudly displayed in a lobby outside of the school\u2019s Brooklyn gym.<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s new fan energy has also quelled riptides between the city and suburban alumni, which arose when LIU merged its two athletic programs, the Brooklyn Blackbirds and its Post campus Pioneers, in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis to me really feels like the thing that could really be the unifier,\u201d Hahn said of the culture shift and on-court success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been needing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Pochapin and Shadrak Lasu hug on the court.  <span class=\"credit\">Michael Nagle for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can bet the duo will be there when the Sharks play during March Madness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a surreal experience,\u201d Koffman said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just fun to see a team that you get so attached to performing at this level and capturing the heart of the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/15\/us-news\/meet-the-fins-up-guys-who-put-liu-hoops-fans-on-the-map\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s quite a Sharks tale.
