In other words, El Ni\u00f1o is more likely than not this year.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"36a2d65a-ac9a-4a4f-9b73-d48012cc55c9-2\">El Ni\u00f1o is the warm phase of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/el-nino\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/el-nino\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/el-nino\"><u>El Ni\u00f1o<\/u><\/a>-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a natural climate pattern of atmospheric and sea temperature changes in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Ni\u00f1o, warmer waters gather east of the equatorial Pacific, forcing the jet stream south. La Ni\u00f1a is expected to end in the coming weeks as the sea warms, according to the latest Climate Prediction Center announcement. El Ni\u00f1o will then occur if sea surface temperatures reach and remain at least 0.9 F above the long-term average.<\/p>\n<p>If El Ni\u00f1o does emerge as anticipated, it could intensify into a &#8220;super El Ni\u00f1o,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/climate\/what-to-know-about-the-growing-potential-for-a-super-el-ni%C3%B1o-later-this-year\/1872561\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/climate\/what-to-know-about-the-growing-potential-for-a-super-el-ni%C3%B1o-later-this-year\/1872561\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>AccuWeather reported<\/u><\/a>. A super El Ni\u00f1o occurs when sea surface temperatures reach at least 3.6 F (2 C) above the long-term average.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Intensity is uncertain but there is potential for a moderate to possibly strong El Ni\u00f1o this fall into winter,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/blogs-webinars\/meet-the-mets-paul-pastelok-accuweathers-senior-meteorologist-and-lead-u-s-long-range-forecaster\/1823979\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/blogs-webinars\/meet-the-mets-paul-pastelok-accuweathers-senior-meteorologist-and-lead-u-s-long-range-forecaster\/1823979\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>Paul Pastelok<\/u><\/a>, a meteorologist and lead U.S. long-range forecaster at AccuWeather, said, per the weather website.<\/p>\n<p>Accuweather&#8217;s forecasters estimate that there&#8217;s a 15% chance of a super El Ni\u00f1o developing by the end of the hurricane season in November. However, they aren&#8217;t always on time. The last super El Ni\u00f1o occurred in 2015-2016.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c0d682a9-ba35-4552-9275-4bee8decd5cb\">The last El Ni\u00f1o contributed to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/climate-change\/2024-was-the-hottest-year-on-record-and-the-first-to-breach-the-1-5-c-global-warming-limit-data-reveals\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/climate-change\/2024-was-the-hottest-year-on-record-and-the-first-to-breach-the-1-5-c-global-warming-limit-data-reveals\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/climate-change\/2024-was-the-hottest-year-on-record-and-the-first-to-breach-the-1-5-c-global-warming-limit-data-reveals\"><u>record-breaking<\/u><\/a> heat in 2023 and 2024, with 2024 currently the hottest year on record. If El Ni\u00f1o emerges in 2026, then the year will get warmer, but is unlikely to be as hot as 2024 \u2014 we started the year in La Ni\u00f1a, after all.
