The US department store chain shut its branch<\/a> in the Cascade Crossing shopping center in Sault Ste. Marie, which borders Ontario, Canada in the state\u2019s upper peninsula, on March 14.<\/p>\n

It followed a massive clearance sale.<\/a><\/p>\n

The store\u2019s boss confirmed the shuttering<\/a> while expressing his sadness on social media<\/a> in late January.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with a heavy heart we have to inform our community that the Sault Sainte Marie Kohl\u2019s will be closing,\u201d said Christopher Herbert, store manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll sales are final and cannot be returned to any Kohl\u2019s locations.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes as Kohl\u2019s<\/a> has been busy closing underperforming stores.<\/p>\n

Last year, the struggling brick and mortar retail chain closed 27 locations<\/a> across 15 states.<\/p>\n

The company also confirmed it was cutting down corporate workforces by 10% and halted offering Amazon returns at certain locations.<\/p>\n

Michael Bender, the CEO of Kohl\u2019s, has blamed the cost-of-living crisis for declining sales<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur core low- to middle-income customers continue \u200cto face \u2060financial pressure and they are seeking value,\u201d Bender said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2026, we are committed to further strengthening our foundation by addressing operational opportunities, building on our strengths, and modernizing our processes. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are confident that the work we are investing in now is essential for Kohl\u2019s long-term benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tony Haller, executive director of the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce, told CBS-affiliate 9and10news<\/a> the trend was concerning for their town.<\/p>\n

Kohl\u2019s<\/a> had been operating at the center for a decade, and at one stage had 80 employees.<\/p>\n

The chain officially opened its 46th location in Michigan with a grand opening in early March 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s concerning for the overall business community in Sault Ste. Marie,\u201d he said on January 29.<\/p>\n

The Kohl\u2019s<\/a> store closure at Cascade Crossing followed the closure of several other businesses during the past 10 years.<\/p>\n

However, the shopping center has seen other major retailers move in, including\u00a0Five Below<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Hobby Lobby<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are hoping they fill those [empty shops] because it attracts other people to the community, it attracts our Canadian customers and it\u2019s a trickle-down effect. It helps our downtown as well,\u201d added Haller.<\/p>\n

The retailer \u2013 which has more than 1,000 locations \u2013 has been losing sales to Amazon and off-price \u200bcompetitors such as Ross Stores, reported Reuters on March 10.<\/p>\n

Since its start, the program has raised over $440 million bringing change for kids and families.<\/p>\n

DIFFERENT IN-STORE EXPERIENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n

To cash in on impulse buyers, additional merchandise will be placed near checkout lines.<\/p>\n

There will also be a greater emphasis on mannequins.<\/p>\n

STORE CLOSURES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under-performing branches are being culled.<\/p>\n

NEW ARRIVALS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kohl\u2019s is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>constantly rolling out new items<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>for shoppers to check<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Shoppers can see a variety of fresh products and deals across multiple categories, including women, men, kids, shoes, jewelry, accessories, toys and home goods.<\/p>\n
