\n\tAs he prepares to direct Saturday\u2019s live Netflix<\/a> event \u201cBTS<\/a> The Comeback Live: Arirang,\u201d Done+Dusted<\/a> partner and director\/exec producer Hamish Hamilton is coming off what they\u2019re internally calling the \u201cquadruple crown.\u201d In just the past few weeks, Hamilton directed the Grammys, the Super Bowl halftime show, the Oscars and now this.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis,\u201d of course, is an hour-long event set to take place Saturday evening local time marking the return of pop superstars BTS as they embark on a global tour to celebrate their return after a lengthy hiatus, and their first studio album in six years.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely enormous,\u201d said Hamilton, who flew into Seoul just hours after Conan O\u2019Brien said his good nights on the Oscars. \u201cGetting off the plane, people were talking about it. The excitement here is palpable as you walk around the streets. It\u2019s such a massive occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdded Done+Dusted partner and executive producer Guy Carrington, who also spoke to Variety<\/em> from Seoul: \u201cI\u2019ve been here maybe 10 days now, and you can see it build. As the stages start to go up, people are starting to congregate, they\u2019re taking photos, and trying to work out what the stage is going to be used for \u2014 like where the band\u2019s going to come from, and everywhere they might go. The whole city is now focusing on this event, there\u2019s a vibe, there\u2019s a real electricity around the city for this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBTS The Comeback Live<\/a>\u201d will take place at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul (where Gyeongbokgung Palace is located) at 8 p.m. Korean time \u2014 and air live throughout the globe on Netflix, including at 7 a.m. ET (and for the folks on the West Coast, a very early 4 a.m. PT). Because it\u2019s an outdoor space, Done+Dusted and BTS can\u2019t do any rehearsals beforehand \u2014 which Hamilton admits is a bit tricky.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s no small feat to be able to create something and deliver it when you don\u2019t have any rehearsal on the stage,\u201d he said. \u201cThere will be no rehearsal with the band on the stage \u2014 that\u2019s kind of bonkers. Not done that before! But you know, through 17 Super Bowls, you learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHamilton, of course, just directed Bad Bunny\u2019s intricate Super Bowl LX halftime show, which is said to have impressed the BTS seven.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe needed their buy in,\u201d said Carrington. \u201cWithout the traditional three or four days of rehearsal time on the stage to run this through from start to finish, we needed their buy in, and we needed access to them. Hamish and I sat down with them in Seoul a few weeks ago to take them through the show and talk them through the process. And they totally got it. This was right after Super Bowl and they\u2019d all watched it, so they understood how these things get put together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCarrington and Hamilton said they had \u201cgreat access\u201d to the BTS members, and workshopped \u2014 sometimes on iPhone \u2014 some of the show\u2019s key moments.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey bought into the idea of, \u2018look, if we really want to tell this story, and if we really want to represent the music, the new chapter, we need your buy in. We\u2019re going to need time with you in the studio. We\u2019re going to need to get into an off site for a few days,\u2019\u201d Carrington said. \u201cAnd they 100% did. They\u2019ve been a joy. Honestly, I didn\u2019t really know what to expect with them. And they\u2019re like seven brothers who are having a great time. They listen, they know what they like, and they\u2019ll add input.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBTS\u2019 members \u2014 Jin, j-hope, RM, V, Jimin, Jung Kook and SUGA \u2014 are all coming off up to 18 months of South Korea\u2019s mandatory military service requirements. The seven all left and returned at various times, and also released solo work. Now, the band\u2019s fifth studio album,\u00a0\u201cArirang,\u201d drops on Friday, the day before the performance, while Netflix will also premiere the doc \u201cBTS: The Return,\u201d about the making of \u201cArirang,\u201d on March 27.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn reviving BTS, there was a sense of national pride \u2014 and they were really keen on throwing this show at Gwanghwamun Square, despite the challenges that come with a non-traditional venue.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere was a lot of deliberation over how to do that and if it\u2019s if it\u2019s actually even possible,\u201d said Done+Dusted North America CEO Melanie Fletcher. \u201cBut they were absolute, steadfast in wanting to have this moment at this venue, and Seoul city got right behind them, knowing it would just be a huge moment for the for the country on a global stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe team eventually came up with an idea where the stage would be framed, like a picture frame. \u201cI was like, \u2018Well, how do we frame the concert? Maybe we just build a big picture frame,\u2019\u201d Carrington said. \u201cAnd so you\u2019ll see the set is essentially a big square cube that\u2019s made out of LED. But it will transform itself during the course of the show. We really wanted there to be moments where the band could be the band, where we could really highlight the palace in the background.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe D+D team is mum on any special surprises that might come on Saturday, only to sharing little tidbits like the cinematic cameras they\u2019ll be using, and how the show \u2014 like BTS\u2019 new album \u2014 will be about the group\u2019s \u201cpersonal journey\u201d over the past few years.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOver the course of the show, you\u2019ll see how each of the tracks is represented slightly differently,\u201d Carrington said. \u201cThere are some big choreography numbers. There are big, impactful, dynamic moments. There\u2019s also really intimate moments. Moments where you see their personality. Moments where they\u2019ll just sit into something and perform together. You can see how like they rib each other. They\u2019ll take the piss out of each other. They\u2019re having a good time. I can\u2019t praise them enough, really.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFletcher said \u201cBTS The Comeback Live\u201d reps \u201cthe sweet spot\u201d for Done+Dusted. \u201cWe\u2019re a company that is both seasoned in event production and live broadcast, and not always do we get the opportunity to bring both of those muscles to flex on shows. This one needs both of those things in full force. We\u2019re going to a completely unknown site in a foreign land to build an event for tens of thousands of people that\u2019s going to be aired globally. So it does require our our \u2018A\u2019 team. The stakes are high.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd she, too, is sensing something special brewing in Seoul. \u201cThe stage crew was saying that there\u2019s a national pride about this event,\u201d Fletcher added. \u201cThey\u2019re working 20 hours out of every 24 and they\u2019re doing it for their idols. I mean that in a cultural moment sense. This is just such a huge thing for the Korean culture, to be able to have an event at this historic site. It\u2019s never been done before. And I think everyone here is feeling so proud about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
