{"id":97426,"date":"2026-03-26T09:36:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/behind-the-scenes-secrets-of-nasa-mission-control\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T09:36:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:36:22","slug":"behind-the-scenes-secrets-of-nasa-mission-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/behind-the-scenes-secrets-of-nasa-mission-control\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind-the-scenes secrets of NASA mission control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxclf2g000x27nv1chrdzkd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Firing Room 1 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida has witnessed the liftoff of several historic Apollo missions, including the one in 1969 that put humans on the moon for the first time, and the maiden flight of Space Shuttle Columbia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcrb790009356r7xvctzck@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Next month, if everything goes to plan, a launch control team will file into the storied NASA nerve center, a beehive of workstations and monitors behind angled glass windows that provide a direct view of the launchpad, to<strong> <\/strong>oversee the final preparations and <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2026\/03\/12\/science\/nasa-artemis-2-launch-date-risk-assessment\">kickoff of Artemis II.<\/a> The mission aims to send four astronauts farther than humans have ever before traveled from Earth as part of the first crewed spaceflight around the moon in 50 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcrb7a000a356rahnwg95s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronauts famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/06\/17\/world\/astronaut-right-stuff-apollo-11-trnd-scn\">need to have the \u201cright stuff.\u201d<\/a> They are selected from thousands of applicants for the characteristics and skills suited to the stresses of spaceflight and the mettle necessary for the rigorous training and grueling simulations that prepare astronauts for any scenario they may encounter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcrb7a000b356rk9nl8ydf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But who has the Artemis II astronauts\u2019 backs as they make the 10-day, roughly 685,000-mile journey around the moon, aboard a rocket and spacecraft that haven\u2019t carried humans before? And what does it take to work in the high-stakes, behind-the-scenes roles that keep astronauts safe and the mission on track?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcrb7a000c356r8wtq29ri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s very psychologically challenging. The decisions that you\u2019re making have life-and-death consequences,\u201d said Wayne Hale, who served as flight director at the NASA Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston between 1988 and 2003. Hale supported 40<strong> <\/strong>space shuttle missions while leading flight operations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcs6wo000g356rn9yhagiy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, launch director of NASA\u2019s Exploration Ground Systems program, will shepherd the liftoff of the first human mission of the Artemis program. She takes charge of the official countdown starting <strong> <\/strong>49 hours and 15 minutes<strong> <\/strong>before launch. Blackwell-Thompson will give the go from Firing Room 1 at Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, near Cape Canaveral, Florida.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcs8iw000i356rfaymkgdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As NASA\u2019s first female launch director, Blackwell-Thompson leads a team <strong> <\/strong>that manages propellant loading and follows the launch commit criteria: a detailed set of rules that determines whether the launch goes ahead or stands down. The test flight set the stage for the highly anticipated crewed mission that could lift off as soon as April 1. With humans on board, Artemis II promises to be \u201cincredibly exciting,\u201d she said. During the final minutes of countdown, an intense hush envelops the room, she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcs8iw000k356rja15e0w8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo as we count through those milestones of terminal count, the room is incredibly quiet in the firing room, because the team is focused on their data. They\u2019re focused on their system. They\u2019re focused on their go, no go or their launch commit criteria and ensuring that we are ready to go fly,\u201d she  explained in the<strong> <\/strong>September 12, 2025, episode of NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/podcasts\/houston-we-have-a-podcast\/artemis-ii-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHouston We Have a Podcast,\u201d<\/a> referring to the launch status check when the flight director queries each team to determine whether the mission can move forward with liftoff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcs8iw000l356rpl0hl816@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For launch, Blackwell-Thompson, who has worked at NASA for 30 years, said she has a tradition she calls \u201cgreen for go\u201d that involves wearing a particular green accessory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcs8iw000m356rmcy49yqw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey\u2019re just very inexpensive little beaded bracelets that I put on,\u201d she said in the podcast. \u201cIt is my symbol. It\u2019s my symbol to myself. It\u2019s my symbol to my team that when I slide that bracelet on every morning, it is my way of saying I am all in. I am here to give it my all.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxcsyjt000p356r3czpuou2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once the countdown hits zero and the towering Space Launch System rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft lifts off, Blackwell-Thompson hands over to Jeff Radigan, Artemis II lead flight director at Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston. How well will the toilet perform?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxct0b7000w356ri1jzgk8c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, the spacecraft will vent urine overboard, and NASA guidance systems need to ensure that process doesn\u2019t affect the spacecraft\u2019s trajectory. Similarly, as the astronauts breathe oxygen on board, carbon dioxide will have to be vented, which puts a force on the vehicle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxct0b7000x356rwyies6y5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have analytical models that are computer-based and they\u2019re informed by the best test data that we have, but until you get the spacecraft with people inside, in the vacuum of space, you really don\u2019t know what the true spacecraft response will be,\u201d Henfling said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxct0b7000y356r0c1cpykc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A pivotal moment for the mission will come about 24 hours into the journey when Orion\u2019s propulsion system fires up for the translunar injection burn, which will send the spacecraft on the trajectory needed to fly by the moon, Henfling said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxct0b7000z356rh7ozrr9t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe big milestone is the TLI decision \u2014 is the spacecraft performing well enough to send four people out potentially further than any people have ever gone before?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxct0b70010356rjttv12p9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The only time mission control in Houston will lose contact with the spacecraft \u2014 apart from a brief blackout during reentry<strong> <\/strong>\u2014 is when Orion goes behind the moon, an event scheduled for Day 6 of the mission. \u201cAll of our communication depends on having a line of sight with Earth,\u201d Henfling said. \u201cIt\u2019s nerve-racking, because whenever you don\u2019t have communication with the spacecraft, you don\u2019t have insight as to what\u2019s going on,\u201d he added.\n However, Henfling noted that the roughly 45-minute period will \u201cbe a special moment for the crew,\u201d and the hope is that the astronauts may be able to  take a striking photo in the same vein as the iconic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/apollo-8-earthrise\/\" target=\"_blank\">Earthrise image<\/a> captured in 1968 by Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxct0b70012356r2mhod0yr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we\u2019re working through a problem, we will give the crew the best information that we have to continue over those 30 to 45 minutes without communication, and we\u2019re confident that when it gets on the other side and the moon is not blocking them anymore, we\u2019ll pick up where we left off,\u201d Henfling said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctoqe0014356rcnqs3pw1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The flight director doesn\u2019t routinely speak to the astronauts on board. That role falls to the capsule communicator, or CapCom, who ensures that the crew receives clear and concise communication. Artemis II\u2019s lead CapCom is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/artemis\/artemis-2\/meet-nasas-artemis-ii-moon-mission-masterminds\/\" target=\"_blank\">NASA astronaut Stan Love<\/a>. After joining the astronaut corps in 1998, he served as CapCom during several space shuttle missions to the International Space Station.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m0017356ry25bdlkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Henfling will, however, speak with the crew on the day before the mission\u2019s most critical stretch: when Orion reenters Earth\u2019s atmosphere and splashes down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m0018356r22c3l38s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTypically when you hear CapCom talking, it\u2019s very operational in nature, formal, but we\u2019re going to just have a conference, and the crew will have had time to study for their procedures for entry, and this will be a chance for them to ask questions in a private setting, a little bit less formal,\u201d he explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m0019356rnpdwop21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Orion crew capsule will enter Earth\u2019s atmosphere \u2014 a point known as entry interface \u2014 at about 25,000 miles per hour (about 40,200 kilometers per hour), transitioning from the vacuum of space to a dense atmosphere and enduring temperatures about half as hot as the surface of the sun at nearly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 degrees Celsius). However, unlike spacecraft returning from the International Space Station, there is only one shot, with no option to wait, for example, for weather conditions on the ground to improve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001a356rvf8jk5e2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m super confident in the team\u2019s ability to execute,\u201d Henfling said. \u201cBut once we hit entry interface, and the heat starts building up on the heat shield, there\u2019s no turning back. We\u2019re coming in and, you know, we\u2019re going to safely finish that mission.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001b356rv08wkv1v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Radigan, NASA\u2019s lead flight director for Artemis II, agreed that landing is uniquely challenging. \u201cIt\u2019s always one of those, you know, operations that gets your heart pumping, and we all kind of hold our breath until we see the parachutes out and the crew hitting the water at a reasonable speed,\u201d he said in the July 25, 2025, episode of NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/podcasts\/houston-we-have-a-podcast\/artemis-ii-the-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHouston We Have a Podcast.<\/a>\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/podcasts\/houston-we-have-a-podcast\/artemis-ii-the-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001c356rjlatesmj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ll be sitting and watching Rick and his team do it, but we\u2019ll be, we\u2019ll be ready for it,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001d356rhw1inx9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several former NASA engineers and a former astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2026\/01\/23\/science\/artemis-2-orion-capsule-heat-shield\">have expressed concern<\/a> to CNN that the bottom part of the Orion spacecraft, called the heat shield, which is designed to protect the astronauts from extreme temperatures, isn\u2019t safe.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001e356rtmg0wh09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This vital part is nearly identical to the heat shield flown on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/2022\/11\/world\/artemis-1-mission-explainer\/\">Artemis I<\/a>, which returned from space with its 16.5-feet wide shield pockmarked by unexpected damage \u2014 prompting NASA to investigate the issue.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Henfling said the space agency had modified the landing trajectory to \u201cmake it a more benign environment on the heat shield.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001g356ru89mduvt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI have a lot of confidence in the engineering that was done and the testing that was done,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so when I sit console on entry day, the heat shield is not going to be something that I\u2019m thinking about.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001h356r6mq79ves@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Flight directors train along with the astronauts for many different scenarios, with a recent exercise simulating a fire on board the spacecraft just before entry interface.  Henfling, who has been a flight director since 2015, is also no stranger to challenging missions. He was in charge of the launch and landing of the test flight of Boeing Starliner in 2024. While astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams arrived safely at the International Space Station, they did not return with the spacecraft after it experienced problems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001i356rusdkvyzy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe practice a lot of different scenarios, but there\u2019s always failure of imagination things,\u201d he said. \u201cOur training is not necessarily to train through all the thousands of things that could go wrong. It\u2019s more to train the team to think critically and to have the critical thinking skills to respond to unforeseen problems.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001j356rkvs80dz1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Henfling doesn\u2019t have any personal good luck charms, but resting on his console at Mission Control in Houston will be a special cloth patch given to him by the Artemis II astronaut crew. One side features the moon, the other Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001k356r7vj037ze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs soon as we get past the furthest point in the mission and start coming back home, \u2026 we\u2019re all going to turn our patches around with Earth prominently displayed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001l356rr59q1bha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Henfling will do his best to go home and sleep during the 10-day mission, but he said it  will be hard to stay away even when he\u2019s not on duty at the console.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001m356r6fdgckm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think once each of us wakes up, we\u2019re going to want to get back to the Johnson Space Center and get back involved with the mission,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmxctr5m001n356rl6ddgik2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a show of what\u2019s possible when humanity works together towards a common goal.
