A source familiar with the incident confirmed the images\u2019 authenticity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn91efan000g3b6qc7tog7zq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stolen emails appear to date from around 2011 to 2022 and appear to include personal, business and travel correspondence that Patel had with various contacts, according to a preliminary CNN review of the files with the help of an independent cybersecurity researcher.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn926y6q000t3b6qcwcesumu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What the hacking group is calling a breach of \u201cimpenetrable\u201d FBI systems is in reality something much more mundane \u2014 a breach of things like family photos and details on Patel\u2019s previous search for an apartment, said the researcher, Ron Fabela.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn927rfm000w3b6q0dk4b02k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis isn\u2019t an FBI compromise \u2014 it\u2019s someone\u2019s personal junk drawer,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn91hgvp000i3b6quubr8mbl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/iran-linked-hackers-claim-breach-of-fbi-directors-personal-email-doj-official-2026-03-27\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> first reported the breach of Patel\u2019s email on Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn95z4nl00023b6qyazqen3f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The FBI has confirmed the breach and said no government information was obtained. It is also not the first time Iranian-backed hackers have accessed Patel\u2019s private information.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn918xji00083b6qn6zu1d2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In late 2024, Patel, just weeks away from being appointed to lead the FBI, was informed by officials that he had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/03\/politics\/kash-patel-targeted-iran-hack\">targeted<\/a> as part of an Iranian hack and some of his personal communications had been accessed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn918xji00093b6q3uh7l15y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 2024 hack was part of a broader effort by foreign hackers \u2014 from China and Iran \u2014 to access accounts for incoming Trump officials including now Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, former interim US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Lindsey Halligan and Donald Trump Jr.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn918xji000a3b6qguy6sznw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Iran-linked hacking group that claimed responsibility for accessing Patel\u2019s emails in this most recent breach was also behind a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/11\/politics\/pro-iran-hackers-cyberattack-medical-device-maker\">cyberattack<\/a> earlier this month that disrupted business operations at a major US medical device maker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn918xjj000b3b6qvcniwlvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The hackers said then that they were retaliating for a missile strike on an elementary school in Iran, which Iranian state media has claimed killed at least 168 children. The Pentagon has said it is investigating that incident.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn918xjj000c3b6qswzlidyu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Justice Department has accused the hackers of working for Iran\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The department responded to the hack of the medical device company by seizing websites used by the Iran-linked hackers to disrupt their operations.
