In addition to picking up two club options, they tacked on two additional seasons, turning a four-year guarantee into an eight-year pact with deferred money. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Could a similar arrangement be in the works for <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/bryce-harper\">Bryce Harper<\/a>? <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIn my discussions with [owner] John [Middleton] and [president of baseball operations] Dave [Dombrowski], they\u2019re fully aware that Bryce has a legacy that he wants to fulfill in Philadelphia beyond the current contract,\u201d agent Scott Boras said in this week\u2019s episode of <i>Phillies Extra<\/i>, The Inquirer\u2019s baseball podcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE:<!-- --> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/roster-core-world-series-2026-season-preview-20260325.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Winning a World Series \u2018changes everything.\u2019 And the Phillies legacies for this veteran core are riding on it.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cAnd we\u2019ve already had discussions about that as we go forward.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Harper, 33, has repeatedly expressed a desire to play into his 40s. He\u2019s eight seasons into a 13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies that runs through his age-38 season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Boras has previously conveyed Harper\u2019s interest in revising the contract. But the deal doesn\u2019t include an opt-out provision that would give Harper leverage to renegotiate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In a wide-ranging conversation, Boras discussed Harper\u2019s future, the long-awaited smashing debut of rookie righty <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/andrew-painter\">Andrew Painter<\/a>, the looming labor fight between baseball\u2019s players and owners, and more. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Here are a few excerpts from the conversation. Watch the full interview below and subscribe to the <i>Phillies Extra <\/i>podcast<i> <\/i>on <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/4i2QJvkeHIizpsSZgXEU2p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Spotify<\/a> or <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/phillies-extra\/id1817019778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Apple Podcasts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><h5 class=\"block font-semibold mt-8 mb-4 text-5 leading-5 lg:text-6 lg:leading-6\">Q: In a weird way, was Painter\u2019s injury maybe a blessing in disguise in that here he is 22 and more mature and ready for the big leagues, where maybe he wasn\u2019t earlier?<\/h5>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><b>A<\/b>: Yeah, certainly our data says that when you follow the patterns of our most recent successful veteran players \u2014 Gerrit Cole or Max Scherzer \u2014 this is along the path that they started their major league careers at 22, 23 because their bodies are more mature. They may weigh 20 or 30 pounds more than they did at 19, and the frame and the ability to transfer the energy generated down to the earth, rather than up to the shoulder and the elbow. And when you have that core strength and leg strength to do that, obviously it creates longevity, durability. It allows your command to be better. And in Andy\u2019s case, you can see that he commanded his fastball [in his <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/phillies-nationals-score-andrew-painter-debut-kyle-schwarber-adolis-garcia-20260331.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/phillies-nationals-score-andrew-painter-debut-kyle-schwarber-adolis-garcia-20260331.html\">debut against the Nationals<\/a> on Tuesday], his off-speed in situations out of the stretch, going in after 70 or so pitches you saw him still command the baseball and do well. And so it was quite a day for the Painter family, for Andy, and we\u2019re very excited about his future.<\/p>\n<p><h5 class=\"block font-semibold mt-8 mb-4 text-5 leading-5 lg:text-6 lg:leading-6\">Q: What\u2019s Bryce Harper\u2019s head space as he begins Year 8 in Philadelphia?<\/h5>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><b>A<\/b>: Bryce is a remarkable athlete. And I think a lot of things about his game is that now, Bryce is defensively one of the top first basemen. And when you talk about elite athletes, that means that they go from one position to another and become even better defensively. And so, he\u2019s positioned himself to be at a position where he\u2019s providing a contribution to the club at a top four or five, league-wise, defensive calibration. No one talks about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">And I think when you go through your career and you examine it, and you talk about what it takes to do things \u2014 people forget that Bryce lost a month last year due to injury \u2014 and when you do those things as an athlete, your numbers are obviously going to reflect it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">All of these numbers that we use as metrics are often volume-based, but the key thing is, we discuss it \u2014 and Bryce and I have talked about his performance \u2014 is that all the skill is in place. It\u2019s really now refinement because the league is fully aware of who Bryce Harper is. The league is fully aware that we are obviously not wanting to take a great hitter who has power and [trying to] avoid him. Here\u2019s how the Phillies feel about the new pitch-challenge system after one week.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">And this sequencing is becoming more and more real. That is the way to approach the Phillies and Bryce Harper. And so, the adjustment is one where you have to be more refined about what you [swing] at, and that\u2019s clearly Bryce\u2019s goal. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any question in his mind [that] he\u2019s in the best shape of his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He is a true two-way player at his position, one of the best players in the league, and he has all that skill, and there\u2019s nothing that I can see \u2014 and we have so many metrics to look to \u2014 there\u2019s nothing that I could see that in any way suggests that he\u2019s not anything but ready for another premium season from what we expect from Bryce Harper.<\/p>\n<p><h5 class=\"block font-semibold mt-8 mb-4 text-5 leading-5 lg:text-6 lg:leading-6\">Q: The one thing that\u2019s eluded Bryce is a World Series ring. Is that the cherry on top now for him to complete the legacy?<\/h5>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><b>A<\/b>: I\u2019m a very blessed guy. I\u2019ve had the opportunity to represent great players. Greg Maddux had one of the most remarkable careers. He won 15 games 17 years in a row. I think someone will break Joe DiMaggio\u2019s [56-game hitting streak] record before [Maddux\u2019s] record is broken. Three hundred fifty-four wins, and how many world championships did he get? He got one. One. And the fight of it was that I had to get him to throw less innings during the season, so his ERA could be better in the postseason, because he was always going so deep in games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Adrian Beltre was a Hall of Fame player, brilliant career, played until he was 40. He was twice within one pitch of winning a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/world-series\">World Series<\/a>. One pitch in Texas, and he didn\u2019t win. And so, when you look at these careers, and you talk about greatness, you can talk about that one championship is something that goes something well beyond the individual. It takes something that is good fortune, a great team, great ownership, to surround a team with talent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE:<!-- --> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/justin-crawford-andrew-painter-prospects-brian-barber-podcast-20260403.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">\u2018Phillies Extra\u2019 Q&amp;A: Brian Barber on the paths to the majors for Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">And in Philadelphia, one of the reasons that Bryce went there \u2014 and remember, I created the opt-out; I did that in Alex Rodriguez\u2019s contract, right? I advised Bryce on it five times, and Bryce said, \u2018No, I want to be in Philadelphia, in one city. I want to win a championship, and to do that, I want to show the fans, and I want to show the organization, and I want to be able to recruit players to Philadelphia and let them know that I\u2019m going to be here for the duration. That\u2019s my best chance at winning a World Series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u2018And as far as my contract and valuation, I know it\u2019s going to change. I hear all your caution, but I trust that I\u2019ll perform well and that the ownership will understand that my motivation is a championship motivation, and we share that common dimension. And I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll treat me fairly down the road.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><h5 class=\"block font-semibold mt-8 mb-4 text-5 leading-5 lg:text-6 lg:leading-6\">Q: Bryce has said he wants to play into his 40s. He\u2019s been very open about that. I\u2019m sure it didn\u2019t escape his notice and yours what they just did with S\u00e1nchez, picking up option years and then adding years. Do you look at that as a precursor to an extension for Harper?<\/h5>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><b>A<\/b>: \u2026 In my discussions with John and Dave, they\u2019re fully aware that Bryce has a legacy that he wants to fulfill in Philadelphia beyond the current contract.
