ORLEANS, N.Y. — A resident’s tip led to a ticket being issued to an individual accused of shooting and killing wild turkeys from their back porch in the North Country.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Law Enforcement reported that the incident occurred in the Town of Orleans, Jefferson County.

According to the DEC, an officer responded to the complaint on Feb. 27 and questioned the person, who admitted to firing four shots and killing three wild turkeys while they were feeding at a bird feeder in the backyard.

The turkeys were found hidden in the bed of the person’s pickup truck.

The officer issued tickets for discharging a firearm within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling, illegally taking wildlife and taking game out of season.

The birds were confiscated as evidence.

The defendant is scheduled to appear in court in April.

The DEC stated that wild turkeys often gather near bird feeders in residential areas during winter to build up fat reserves.

The legal season for wild turkeys runs from May 1 to May 31 with a bag limit of two bearded birds per hunter.
