PGA Championship third round leaderboard, live updates: Can Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy catch the leaders?

Rory McIlroy is on an absolute tear in the third round, and he’s doing so at the perfect time as the wind starts to pick up around the course.

He just birdied the par-4 13th for his sixth of the day, and he’s now tied for the lead.

Make that four straight birdies from Sam Burns, and he’s suddenly with the group at 3-under.

It feels like someone is going to join the leaders, who don’t tee off for another hour or so, soon.

Haotong Li with the putt of the day from just inside 80 feet! What a birdie.

Remarkably, Justin Rose’s 30 on the front nine was the first time he’s ever pulled that off in his major career.

His 5-under 65 has him at 2-under now, very much in the mix.

Chris Kirk’s stellar round ends with a double bogey … ouch.

He was 7-under on his round, then missed an 8-footer for par at 18, then the 3-footer for bogey.

Still, it’s a 65. He’d have taken that at the start of the day.

And now he’s just one back of the lead.

With a birdie at 11 — one that just trickled in — Rory is now to -3. At 4-under for the round, he’s still got some holes left to move into the lead before the clubhouse leaders even tee off.

Chris Kirk is still lighting it up. After lipping out a birdie putt at 16, he drained one at 17 for his 8th birdie of the day. That one gets him to -4 for the tourney and in a tie for the lead.

Also…. one hole to see if he can card a 62. He’ll need a birdie at 18.

At the par 5 9th, Koepka put his second just off the green, leaving a delicate chip …. which he deposited in the bottom of the cup for eagle, and he’s now to -1.

Back-to-back birdies at 5 and 6 got Rory to red figures. And now, with a kick in at 9 for another birdie, he will get it to 2-under for the tournament, just two shots off the lead.

He found the bunker on 14, pitched out, but couldn’t get it up and down. It’s a bogey for Rose at 14. He’s back to 2-under.

Moments after Kirk got it to -3, Justin Rose joined him with a birdie of his own at 13. Like Kirk, he’s 6-under on his round.

With a birdie at 3, Kirk is now 6-under on his round, 3-under for the tournament, just a stroke back.

Can he get to 8-under and tie the record for lowest score ever in a PGA Championship?

If you’re Rory McIlroy, that is.

It’s listed at 397 yards. Rory just greened it with a 369-yard drive. Yes, it’s downwind. That led to a second-straight birdie, and now McIlroy is in red figures at -1.

Jordan Spieth is taking some heat for his choice of shirt today. But at least it’s useful:

We told you about the driveable par-4 13th. Well, Kristoffer Reitan nearly missed an albatross, knocking his drive off the pin.

That led to an eagle 2, but was thisclose to a 1.

McIlroy follows the bogey at 4 with a birdie at 5 to get back to get back to even par.

Can a string a few more together?

At just 292 yards, it’s a driveable par 4, which Michael Kim just did… then made the eagle putt. He’s back to 1-under for the tourney

That would be Chris Kirk and Justin Rose, who are both 5-under on their rounds — Kirk through 11, Rose through 10.

Both are 2-under, and right back in it … for now.

The big question, obviously, is how conditions will be when the leaders tee off. More wind is expected, so the early wave could have an advantage.
