Reno hit 92 degrees Sunday, May 10, breaking a decades-old record as near-record heat continues across Northern Nevada through Tuesday.
Reno broke a daily heat record Sunday, May 10 as Northern Nevada entered a stretch of unusually hot weather expected to continue through Tuesday.
The Reno-Tahoe International Airport recorded a high of 92 degrees Sunday, breaking the previous record of 88 degrees for the date set in 1934, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. South Lake Tahoe also broke a daily record with a high of 79 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 75 degrees set in 2025.
The weather service said Sunday marked Reno’s first 90-degree day of 2026. On average, the first 90-degree day in Reno arrives around June 7.
Forecasters said temperatures will remain near record highs through Tuesday as a strong high-pressure ridge lingers over the western United States.
Highs across northwestern Nevada valleys are expected to reach the upper 80s to middle 90s, roughly 15 to 20 degrees above seasonal averages.
Current records that could still be tied or broken include:
NWS said minor to moderate heat risk is expected across the region through Tuesday, especially at lower elevations.
“Please remember to stay hydrated and limit exposure to the sun during the warmest parts of the day, especially if you have outdoor plans and are sensitive to heat,” forecasters said in an area forecast discussion Monday morning.
Dry conditions are expected to continue into early this week, though isolated thunderstorms could develop Tuesday afternoon in parts of western Nevada. Some storms could produce strong wind gusts exceeding 50 mph.
A cooldown is expected to begin by midweek as a weather system moves into the region. High temperatures in Reno are forecast to fall back into the 70s and lower 80s by Wednesday and Thursday, accompanied by breezy conditions and slight chances for showers.
