The Cascavel Municipal Zoo, a benchmark in animal welfare in Paraná, has received two female white-whiskered spider monkeys (Ateles marginatus), a species endemic to the Brazilian Amazon and threatened with extinction. The arrival of these monkeys reinforces the institution's commitment to the conservation of Brazilian fauna.

The two female monkeys, mother and daughter, were born at the “Quinzinho de Barros” Municipal Zoological Park in Sorocaba (SP) and were transported free of charge through Latam's Solidarity Plane program, cutting travel time by about 10 hours compared to land transport, arriving at the Foz do Iguaçu airport (PR).

Care and adaptation in the new habitat

After the transfer, the animals were taken to the Cascavel Zoo and underwent quarantine, veterinary-medical evaluation, and clinical monitoring. According to biologist Vanilce Pereira, technical teams are monitoring the females for adaptation to the environment, dietary adjustments, and gradual integration into local management.

Following veterinary clearance, the female monkeys will share the enclosure with another female of the same species already kept at the zoo, promoting important social interaction for their well-being and reproduction.

National conservation project

This transfer is part of the Endangered Species Conservation Project, carried out through a Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Brazilian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZAB), ICMBio, and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. The objective is to strengthen genetic diversity and the integrated management of the species under human care.
