HOOVER, AL — Coach Brian O’Connor’s first game leading Mississippi State baseball in the SEC Tournament was a success.
The No. 8 seed Bulldogs beat No. 16 Missouri 12-2 on May 20 in the second round of the SEC Tournament. It was a seven-inning run-rule win.
MSU (40-16) advanced to play No. 1 seed Georgia on May 21 (3 p.m., SEC Network) in the quarterfinals. The Missouri (24-31) run comes to an end after the Tigers upset Ole Miss in the first round on May 19.
Left fielder Vytas Valincius was the star for MSU. He was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
His brother Tomas Valincius (10-2) started the game on the mound and got the win. He pitched six innings and allowed one earned run. Missouri pitcher Brady Kehlenbrink (3-10) got the loss.

The rout is on. MSU jumped ahead 12-2 in the bottom of the sixth after a three-run home run from Vytas Valincius.
MSU goes up 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth after left fielder Vytas Valincius hit a home run to left field. It is the 104th home run of the season for MSU which breaks the record of 103 hit last season.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Gehrig Frei RBI single. MSU leads 4-2.
The Tigers cut MSU’s lead to 3-2 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Patterson.
Mississippi State took a 3-1 lead in the second inning on Ryder Woodson’s three-run homer with two outs.
Catcher Chone James won a challenge in the second inning, turning a ball into a called third strike.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a home run by Kam Durnin.

The Bulldogs enter the game two home runs away from breaking the single-season record of 103 set last season.
The Bulldogs have won the SEC Tournament seven times, most recently in 2012.
Mississippi State enters the game ranked No. 12 in RPI. Missouri is No. 109.
Mississippi State versus Missouri will air on 96.1 FM. The radio broadcast is also streaming on MSU’s athletics website or on the MSU Hail State app.
According to AccuWeather, it will be 79 degrees at first pitch between Mississippi State vs. Missouri with a 20% chance of rain and wind at 5 mph.
The game between Mississippi State and Missouri will air on SEC Network.
