Spain and Argentina are deadlocked in the World Cup final. Now what?
There has yet to be a score inside MetLife Stadium on Sunday, July 19 as both sides try to get on the scoreboard and get that much closer to becoming World Cup champions. The first half didn’t generate that many opportunities for the first goal, and there still has yet to be one as the second half is underway.
With the clock getting closer to full time, you may be wondering what’s next in determining who will win the World Cup? If neither team is able to score − or if they end up matching each other’s goal − by the end of 90 minutes of action, this is what will happen to determine a winner.
Can the World Cup final end in a draw?
No, the match cannot end in a tie. There must be a winner.
If the match is tied after regulation, it will go to extra time.
World Cup extra time rules
Extra time at the World Cup will last a total of 30 minutes – plus stoppage time. It will be divided into two, 15-minute halves, with necessary stoppage time being tacked onto the end of each period.
There is no golden goal in the World Cup, which is when a goal ends the match like sudden death. If one team scores in the extra time, the match will still go on until the time is completed.
What happens after extra time?
If Spain and Argentina still cannot determine a winner in extra time, the contest will be decided by a penalty kick shootout.
The penalty shootout features players from each teams taking alternating shots from the penalty spot – located 12 yards away from the goal in the center of the pitch – until a winner is determined. Only the 11 players on the pitch at the end of extra time are allowed to participate in the penalty shootout.
Each team will get five attempts in the penalty shootout. However, not all five kicks may be necessary, and the shootout can come to an early end if a team is able to build an insurmountable lead at any point during the endgame maneuvers.
If still tied after five kicks, the shootout will enter sudden-death; teams will take one kick each until one side makes its shot and the other misses.
