COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – Multiple agencies are responding in Mount Olive after reports of a Covington County deputy being shot near a supermarket Monday afternoon, according to law enforcement.
Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston confirmed the shooting, which happened at the Greer’s CashSaver, located on 406 Main Street.
According to Houston, the deputy is suffering from life-threatening injuries due to being shot above the vest under the arm.
Witnesses and sources have told WDAM 7 that multiple agencies are responding to the shooting. One witness said she was able to hear shots possibly being fired while she was at home. She said there is an ambulance and police tape “everywhere.”
Another viewer photo was able to capture footage of a person walking toward a wooded area near a home shortly after shots were fired.
Houston told WDAM 7 that state and federal agencies are assisting in the search for a possible suspect.
Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel told WDAM 7 that deputies are on their way with the SRT Team and K-9 units.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Department told WDAM 7 that they also have deputies, investigators and narcotics agents at the scene in Mount Olive to help with the manhunt.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves posted his response on Facebook, asking for the public’s prayers for the deputy as law enforcement continues the investigation.
WDAM 7 has reached out to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation for information about the incident.
